Established in 2016, Short Creek Joint Fire District serves the residents of Adena, former Village of Smithfield, Smithfield Township, and outlying areas in Jefferson and Harrison counties. As fire and EMS volunteers declined, the local officials determined the need for a paid service in the township to protect and serve our citizens efficiently. Offering the first township wide service in Jefferson County, Short Creek Joint Fire District was formed. SCJFD is a joint service that serves approximately 3500 people in 40 square miles and runs on average 600 calls a year. SCJFD is a full time department with 2 EMT’s staffing 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. These members currently serve out of 2 firehouses, one in Adena and one in Smithfield, with volunteers and mutual aid covering second calls and other emergencies. SCJFD is contracted to provide a multitude of services ranging from medical emergencies, structure fires, rescue operations, hazardous materials, and more. SCJFD operates under a fire board composed of members of council in Adena, representative from Smithfield township residents, as well as a Smithfield Township trustee. The fire district is dedicated to the protection of lives and property, as well as public service to our community.
