What qualifications do I need to become a volunteer firefighter?
SCJFD has a minimum age requirement, though we allow younger members to enroll as explorers. Please see the explorer application for more information. SCJFD has a physical exam requirement.No Fire/ EMS Certifications needed!
What is the first step to volunteering?
Call either fire station and express your interest. Schedule a ride along on our recruitment page. Fill out this application and follow the process to ensure this is right for you!
Do volunteer firefighters get paid?
Volunteer firefighters do not get paid, but they can get reimbursed. Reimbursement is strictly for carded EMS members running calls after hours or additional calls not covered by the paid crew.
Should I start physical training before applying to volunteer?
Yes, a training program will likely help you achieve the physical standards required by your department. Contact your local department for a recommended list of exercises.
Can a volunteer position lead to a career in firefighting?
Yes. Volunteering is one of the best ways to get the necessary training and experience to be an attractive candidate for a career firefighting position.
Can I become a volunteer EMT at my local fire department?
Yes! With a high volume of medical calls, SCJFD urges volunteers to get their EMT cards.
How many hours do volunteer firefighters work?
SCJFD Requires a minimum of 10 hours a month to stay eligible as a volunteer.
